As Memorial Day approaches, the Westerville Sunrise Rotary is presenting the Field of Heroes over Memorial Day weekend (May 29th - 31st).

Field of Heroes is an installation of 2000 American flags to honor those who have and do sacrifice and serve. The Field of Heroes is located not far from Uptown Westerville at County Line Road and Cleveland Avenue, across from the Community Rec Center.

This year, the installation will also feature the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall.

On May 27th, escorted by Westerville Police and the Ohio Patriot Guard Riders Motorcycle Brigade between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., the Moving Wall will arrive in Westerville on a route that rolls south on State Street from Polaris Parkway, through Uptown Westerville, west on Schrock Road and north on Cleveland Ave. Organizers are encouraging folks to stand along the procession route to honor the veterans, the wall, and the holiday.

You may be interested in attending or know someone who would be, so please pass the word if you will.

Mark your calendars! The 2010 Independence Day celebration is Saturday, July 3rd.

The day starts with the Rotary Run- a 5k walk/run. There's a children's run, too. The run starts at 8 a.m. and registration begins at 6:30 a.m. There is an entry fee of $25 if you enter before June 20th and $30 after (including July 3rd). For more information on the Rotary Run, click here.

The Rotary Club of Westerville Independence Day Parade theme this year is Freedom -- The Best Gift of All. Start time for the parade is 1 p.m.

If you plan on a parade float or entry, the fee is $75 before June 18th and then $100 after.

Fireproof will have their mobile shredding truck on-site to dispose of your documents. There is a limit of five (5) boxes per household. This is a FREE service.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2010. The Sunshine Rotary Club of Westerville is again sponsoring the Field of Heroes flag display at the southwest corner of Cleveland Ave. and County Line Rd. from May 29 - 31. As part of the Memorial Day weekend, the Westerville Fire Fighters Memorial Bike Tour takes place on Saturday, May 29th at 9 a.m. You can participate in a 25, 50, or 75 mile bike tour around Westerville and surrounding areas and registration is $25 (check or cash). The Memorial Day parade is May 31, 2010, details to follow, so check back with the blog (normally the parade is in the a.m.). When you come up for the parade, allow time to follow the parade on its route past the Armory to Otterbein Cemetery -- it's just something people do on their own, just to honor - a truly heartfelt tradition.

The Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market season begins on Wednesday, May 5th at 3 p.m. at N. State and E. Home Streets in the Church of the Messiah, UM parking lot.

Market favorite vendors are returning for another season and the market's added some new vendors, too. The market is open for business every Wednesday, May through October, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Home-grown. Home-made. All Ohio.

The market meets rain or shine (within reason and with common sense -- in the case of lightning, market activity will supsend (to resume once the storm passes) and at that point, it's every man, woman, and child for themselves!!) and all market vendors have canopies.

UWFM has a new logo: The logo with the ginkgo leaf represents the market seasons from spring to fall and Uptown Westerville. Besides the big, beautiful ginkgo tree at City Hall, State Street is lined with young ginkgo trees. The ginkgo tree is an ancient tree that represents resilience, longevity, prosperity, wisdom, hope, and peace. We couldn't think of a better symbol for the community or the market.

WARM (Westerville Area Resource Ministry) and the Uptown Westerville Farmers' Market are teaming up for year 3 of the WARM Fresh Green Program.

Through the WARM Fresh Green Program market vendors accept Fresh Green vouchers so anyone in greater Westerville (the Westerville City School district) can purchase healthy fresh produce, fruit-bearing plants, and artisan foods no matter their need. In 2009, market vendors honored $2,470 in WARM Fresh Green vouchers and every eligible market vendor participated!

Otterbein College is bringing back Founders' Days on April 24th, 25th, and 26th.

Activities include the Spring Plunge (a community service day that starts at 9 a.m.), Scrap Day (a 5k "Donut Run" that benefits WARM and old-school games (tug of war, cornhole, water balloons...) and a River Frolic with free kayaking on Alum Creek), and Convocation (historical music and reenactments and a reception that includes a "lost Otterbein" self-guided tour -- no classes during Convocation, btw!)

This event is free and there is plenty of parking.

Designed for Seniors and Caregivers, SOS Day features exhibitors and presentations that focus on health, safety, and crime prevention including 2 special sessions presented by the Ohio AG's office: 1) Plan Well/Live Well and 2) Identity Theft/Scams.

WMNI will be providing the music and there is a free lunch and door prizes (while supplies last).

The Westerville Senior Center has transportation to the event (check with the center ahead of time for details).

We have a feeling it won't be much longer until spring is here! It has been a long winter and we are excited for all the events coming up in the spring months as well as all the new wines and changes at Meza!

We have been having a great time at our weekly wine tasting events - even the snow hasn't slowed people down! We hope you continue to come see us each Friday, chat for a bit, taste some great wines, find new favorites. Tastings are a great way for us to find out what our customers like. When we chose wines for our shelves, we taste them and make sure they fit in our assortment. Many times though, we look to what the big favorites are at the tasting events to determine what will stay on our shelves! So be sure to give us feedback, and let us know what wines you love!

We loved this Chardonnay because of the quality for this price. From the renowned Owen Roe winery, this Chardonnay is crisp and refreshing. Loads of green apple flavor with only a slight creamy texture. No big oak explosion here.

The 2008 vintage of this domestic Riesling made the Wine Spectator Top 100 list for 2009! This winery is known for their consistent quality in wines from year to year. The goal in establishing Perseo Cigar Co. was to create a unique blend of tobacco, combine that unique blend with high quality construction to create a new brand of cigars which are complex and have a delightful taste which is consistent and priced so that everyone can afford to indulge in smoking ROXOR daily.

We decided to go to Estelli, Nicaragua to find a manufacturer and blend. After months of experimentation with blends, soliciting opinions on variations in blends, tasting and testing and more tasting we reached our goal.

Naming the cigar: We assembled a legal team for trademark, copyright, and legal protection for the brand. We searched and searched for a name. We read history books, researched at the library, talked to anyone who would listen and brainstormed. We envisioned a Spanish or Cuban nobleman. Every name we came up with was unavailable. The mega tobacco companies had reserved and protected every name imaginable. We decided to abandon the traditional approach to our brand name and traditional packaging and develop a New, Unique Name, Label, and Packaging. This was a calculated risk but worth it.

ROXOR was born. ROXOR is a polynome which means it is pronounced and spelled the same forward and backward.

It's still snowing (although it's now consider "tail end") and so far, the slightly 25" this month is the most snow in February since 29" in 1910! (Ahhh, the good old days -- last year we had less than an inch during the whole month!)

Franklin, Delaware, and Licking Counties remain at Level 2 Snow Emergency status and there is no parking on snow emergency streets in Westerville. (Keep those plows moving!)

Otterbein College president Kathy Krendl announced that beginning with the Class of 2011, Otterbein College will become Otterbein University.

Otterbein, founded in 1847 as Otterbein University of Ohio by the United Brethren Church, transitioned from university to college in 1917 as its leaders wanted "to call the school by its right name." At the time its programs were focused exclusively on undergraduate liberal arts. The cornerstone of Otterbein University still remains embedded in the front of Towers Hall built in 1872 on Grove Street.

"Otterbein has the diversity of academic programs that define a university and has made enhancements to the academic structure by adding three schools, including the Graduate School," said President Kathy A. Krendl. "The alignment of our name and our mission communicates to national and international audiences that we are a comprehensive institution. Our integrative studies curriculum, award-winning community service opportunities, and study abroad programs are identifiers that distinguish Otterbein."

The city has a series of marked snow emergency streets and when snowfall accumulates 3" or more, those streets become no parking zones (so they can be plowed).

Nestled among galleries, boutiques, niche stores and antiques dealers, the proprietors of DJ's Feed Store, 41 N. State St., know they're a bit of an oddity in Uptown Westerville.

"It almost seems out of place," manager Bill Rohrbaugh said. "We're an old type of store, and it just has kind of a nostalgic feel to it."

But he said operating a business that's slightly out of the norm has its advantages, often attracting intrigued passersby into the 28-year-old business.

While those people might not be in the market for horse feed, dog food or birdseed, they may find a handmade bird house, homemade dog treats or other specialty items in the store.

"We try to get things that are unique, that you can't find anywhere," Rohrbaugh said.

The store also offers advantages over large national stores that offer similar products, said owner David Chapman. DJ's Feed Store provides customers with one-on-one attention and an extensive knowledge of animals and how to care for them, he said.

"As long as you stand there, we're going to talk about your rabbit, your hamster, your horse," Chapman said. "You go into a box store, and you get a 20-year-old who only knows what he's been taught."

Chapman and his wife, Kathy, purchased DJ's Feed Store nearly two years ago. Kathy was a regular customer at the store and noticed the for-sale sign on the counter one day.

Though both were working full-time jobs, Chapman said they were led to buy the store because of their passion for animals.

"My wife and I have always loved animals," he said. "We just have a passion for animals."

That passion has become part of the business culture at the store.

DJ's works with Central Ohio Greyhound Rescue, providing people with opportunities to meet adoptable, rescued greyhounds and to talk with the people who own them.

They also offer classes for pit bulls and help rescued animals find homes -- and more than one dog has found its way home with the Chapmans.

Since the Chapmans took over the store, they've seen business grow.

When Chapman lost his job a year ago, he began making stops to see people who owned horses in order to drum up business. DJ's also began offering same-day deliveries and now has customers from as far away as Johnstown.

With that success, Chapman said he and his wife have been blessed, despite the reservations they had when making the transition from working full-time jobs elsewhere to focusing on DJ's full time.

"It's been a blessing in disguise. We were both scared," Chapman said. "This place is so fun, I don't even consider it a job."

That passion for the work, which is shared by the store's two employees, is what has made the store a mainstay in Uptown, both Chapman and Rohrbaugh said.

"It's not just ringing the register. It's the camaraderie or the bond we create with our customers," Rohrbaugh said. "When we see the satisfaction from the customer, it makes us feel good."

Uptown gallery is not defined by its space

Gallery 202, found on the second floor of 38 N. State St., isn't bound by its four walls, said Renee Kropat, owner of the nonprofit gallery and art center.

"I enjoy doing community art. I enjoy being out in the community," Kropat said. "For art, it isn't the space you're in; it's the whole community."

Because of Kropat's mission to be a community art initiative, Gallery 202 has worked to be part of Westerville in many ways.

Gallery 202 artists have painted banners to line poles on State Street. Kropat has led the painting of several murals around the city, which involve her outlining an image and allowing any interested community members to join in to paint and finish the final work.

One of the gallery's projects, Wild Women Wander Westerville, partners with Uptown businesses to take a group of women on a tour of those stores. The women then socialize in the gallery during a silent auction to benefit the gallery.

Kropat also founded the Saturday Uptown Market, featuring arts, crafts and fresh farm products, in 2009 and plans to continue it next summer.

She opened Gallery 202 in 2005, about a year after she founded the nonprofit Partners in Art Inc.

Previously, she operated a for-profit gallery in Uptown, which she closed in 2001 after a seven-year run.

Kropat said she opened another gallery on the urging of people she knew, but she refused to return to a for-profit operation.

"A for-profit gallery is a lot of hard work. I had kind of given up the gallery thing," Kropat said.

In addition to going out into the community, she aims to pull the community into her gallery, offering art camps for children, classes for adults, team-building workshops for businesses, classes for Girl Scouts, special contests and rental space for events, among other things.

Throughout the year, Gallery 202 also offers special events and contests

Works by local artists of all types, including those in classes in Westerville schools, are displayed in the space. A gift shop also offers items made by local artists.

"It's important that we're not just a lone gallery, that we work with the schools, that we work with the community," Kropat said. "It's much more fun that way."

And all of the programs Kropat offers are aimed at making sure participants have fun and to teach people the importance of all levels of art.

"I think too often, art is considered elitist," Kropat said. "I think there's a continuum. I think it's important that people realize that refrigerator art is just as important as the high-end, million-dollar art."

Above all, she said, her goal with the gallery is to get people to appreciate and participate in art, regardless of their levels of experience.

"We all think we have a standard we need to reach," Kropat said. "We need to tell our own stories. If we don't tell them, who will?"

To Jen Romey, the owner of the newly opened Bella Laccio Bridal in Uptown, shopping for a wedding dress is all part of a bride's experience.

With her new shop, which opened earlier this week at 46 N. State St., Romey said she will strive to make that experience special for each bride.

That means the store will operate primarily on individual appointments, providing each bride with a chance to look at and try on dresses while receiving individual attention.

"It's such a small boutique that I want the bride to feel like it's her day, like it's part of her experience," Romey said. "So many places brides go, there are other brides trying on dresses."

The individual attention also will help each bride find her ideal dress, Romey said.

"A lot of time, they don't know what they want in a gown, or what they look best in," she said, which can lead to a bride feeling overwhelmed. "I want the whole experience to be relaxing."

Brides can enhance their wedding-preparation experience by scheduling a fitting party, during which the bride and bridal party can come back at one time to have their fittings done while enjoying refreshments.

Romey said opening a small wedding boutique is something she has long dreamed about, and Uptown Westerville seemed like the ideal place to the Otterbein College graduate.

"This is a childhood dream of mine. I always wanted to open a bridal boutique," she said.

Romey has spent the last two months remodeling the interior of her Uptown storefront, which previously housed Lola Belle Boutique, a lingerie store.

Bella Laccio offers couture wedding dresses ranging in price from $600 to $3,000, along with bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. In selecting styles for the store, Romey said she'll focus on silhouettes and the latest bridal fashions.

All of the designers carried in the store are based in New York, and the dresses will be constructed of higher-end fabrics, she said.

Because Bella Laccio is a small boutique, Romey said brides will be able to work with designers to alter dresses to fit their needs.

As her business grows, Romey said she hopes to capitalize on her background in event planning by offering wedding planning services.

Local leaders planning to continue Uptown growth

Uptown Westerville has undergone a transformation in recent years as new retailers bring in an eclectic mix of businesses.

To capture Uptown's new feel, local leaders said they are working to change Uptown's reputation as an antiques-store haven and to bring more foot traffic to Westerville's historic district.

"We're still somewhat of a hidden treasure here," said Kriss Rogers, owner of Outside Envy and president of the Westerville Uptown Merchants Association (WUMA).

Some of that work to spread the word about Uptown business already has begun, as the Westerville Visitors and Convention Bureau teams up with the WUMA each summer on events such as the Fourth Friday Celebrations, which offer themed parties in Uptown's streets once a month.

Westerville Visitors and Convention Bureau executive director Jeff Hartnell said when he took over his role three years ago, events thrown by the group brought in fewer than 1,000 people.

Now, they bring in more than 6,000, but Hartnell said there is more work to be done to attract more and more traffic.

"I'm going to stay here until there are 10,000 people down here every Fourth Friday," he said.

The monthly summertime events, along with seasonal events organized in Uptown, may not attract the most dollars to Uptown businesses, Rogers said, but they do play an important role in giving people a chance to see what Uptown has to offer.

"That's just a big invitation to get people up here," she said. "We don't expect to do a lot of business those nights, but it's a chance for us to showcase our businesses."

Going forward, WUMA and the Visitors and Convention Bureau plan to continue to partner together and, along with the city and other interested Westerville groups, to continue to create marketing strategies and more opportunities for residents to come and explore Uptown.

Hartnell said he believes the partnerships being developed in Westerville are what will fuel an increased awareness about Uptown.

"It's the first time in years that these groups have been pulled together," he said.

Other initiatives to increase awareness about Uptown include a push by WUMA and its member merchants to educate and encourage people to shop locally owned businesses.

Since Rogers took over as WUMA president in July, the group has focused on publicizing the 3/50 project, which encourages people to think about three local merchants they would be sad to see close and to commit to spending $50 at a locally owned, independent business each month.

She said she believes the effort has brought positive results for businesses, and merchants plan to continue to raise awareness.

"I think the talking that we've done has paid off," she said.

A future city project also could have a positive impact on business and traffic in Uptown Westerville, Westerville City Councilwoman Diane Fosselman said.

For more than a year, the city has been working on plans to update the South State Street corridor.

Design standards have been upgraded for the area of State Street south of Uptown, and the city plans to reconstruct the intersection of South State Street and Huber Village Boulevard and to work with the Ohio Department of Transportation on a planned overhaul of the intersection of I-270 and Westerville Road.

Those upgrades should encourage more visitors to Uptown, Fosselman said, because they will give visitors to Westerville entering north from I-270 a positive impression of the city.

"What we're going to work on there is the entryway to the community," Fosselman said. "That's what sets the first impression to the community."

Editor's note: This story is the third in a five-part series examining what makes Uptown Westerville unique and highlighting selected businesses there.

When Sylvia Francisco wanted to retire from her job as a baker and cake decorator with Kroger, her husband decided to help her open her own restaurant in Uptown Westerville.

Twenty-two years into their venture, Pasquale's Pizza & Pasta, 14 N. State St., is still going strong and prides itself on being the oldest independent restaurant in Uptown.

"We're the old goats of Uptown," Jim Francisco said. "We've been here the longest."

The restaurant got its start in 1988, opening in a small storefront on Main Street, formerly called Alley Pizza. Sylvia Francisco filled the menu with family recipes and recipes she took from her time working at her aunt's pizza shop on Morse Road.

The popularity of the homemade pasta, pizzas and desserts took off, leading the restaurant to gradually increase its size.

"Little by little, we started expanding the little hole in the wall that Alley was," Jim Francisco said.

The Franciscos began by adding 50 seats, then a 25-seat party room. Last year, they expanded to 115 seats and created a prominent entrance on State Street.

In its 22 years in Uptown, Pasquale's also has seen Westerville make the transition from being a traditionally "dry" town to one where alcohol can legally be sold and served.

The restaurant began serving beer and wine in 2006, though Francisco said he was hesitant to seek a liquor option for his business.

"I thought we'd lose our family business by putting beer and wine in," he said.

The result, however, was that Pasquale's began seeing its typical family crowd around 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. with a later crowd of people looking to enjoy drinks with their dinners around 8 p.m.

"It's still kept that family atmosphere but gave us another influx of later customers," he said.

Francisco said he believes Pasquale's family atmosphere has kept the restaurant a success in Uptown.

His own family plays a big part in creating that atmosphere. Though the restaurant began as an outlet for his wife, Francisco began working there after he retired, and their two children, Lisa and Anthony, have become active in restaurant operations.

"The family's been with it the whole way," he said. "Now I have grandkids busing tables, so I guess it's going to stay a family restaurant."

The resurgence of foot traffic to Uptown, for which Francisco gives credit to the city, the Westerville Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Westerville Uptown Merchants Association, also has helped the restaurant.

"You could see Uptown Westerville was turning into a nonentity. There just wasn't a lot of Uptown traffic," he said. "All of a sudden, it just became a diverse Uptown market, which creates traffic."

And of course, he said, his wife, Sylvia, gets much of the credit for the restaurant's success, since it's her cooking that keeps customers coming back.

"She still makes, to this day: The pasta's homemade, the sauce is made every day, the meatballs are homemade, the bread is homemade," Francisco said. "And people know, they can taste the difference."

Good Red Wine of your Choice
Mulling Spices (cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange peel)
Sugar
Water

Based on the number of guests you have, you will want to measure out 1/2 glass of red wine and 1/2 glass of water per person. Pour water and wine together into a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add in 1 tablespoon of sugar per person.Place mulling spices ( about 1 tablespoon full) into a mesh cheesecloth and tie with kitchen twice. Drop into saucepan.Cook all ingredients together on the stove top - bring to a boil and allow to boil for about a minute.Remove from the heat. Discard mulling spices. Community support leads to success for Encircle

Amy Heath is the owner of Encircle, located at 30 N. State St. in Uptown WestHeath said she credits the Westerville community with for the success of her business, which sells American-made crafts and clothing.

When Amy Heath purchased The Bibelot Shop, an American craft gallery in Uptown Westerville, she knew she was taking a leap.

"I saw The Bibelot Shop for sale, and I just did it -- a leap of faith," said Heath, who was then employed as a case worker.

In the seven years since, Heath has turned The Bibelot Shop into Encircle, 30 N. State St., which she expanded into two Uptown storefronts two years ago.
She said she credits the Westerville community with making her business, along with the many others in Uptown, successful.

"It's definitely the people in Westerville," Heath said. "They want to support downtown. They're always up here."

The two stores in one at Encircle sell only American-made craft goods. One side of the shop features crafts to wear -- such as jewelry and sweaters -- while the other features crafts for the home.

Some of the artists presented in the store are holdovers from its days as The Bibelot Shop, Heath said. But she said she's modernized and brought in works by many new artists.

Some artists whose work Encircle sells work on a larger scale, she said, but some are local artists whose work she sells on consignment.

Which items are the biggest sellers for the stores changes with the seasons, Heath said. As the holiday approaches and the winter chill begins to set in, she said candles and sweaters become the hot items.

"It's cyclical. It's always changing," she said. "Sometimes it's jewelry and sometimes it's pottery and sometimes it's glass."

One thing that doesn't change is the type of items available in her store, Heath said. She said all are meant to be works of art that are high-quality, useful and affordable.

"I really focus on quality and cost," Heath said. "I focus on functional art pieces of good quality that are affordable."

Heath said Uptown Westerville has been the right place for her shop because of the small-town feel and the support she sees from the customers.

"Uptown Westerville is very nice, and I love, love Westerville," she said. "The people in Westerville are wonderful, and they support their downtown. It's like a small town, but we're in the city."

The support of customers is growing, Heath said, as is evident from people determined to shop locally during the recession, even if they're spending less and purchasing smaller items.

"We're getting a lot of people this year saying, 'We don't want to shop in the mall any more,'" Heath said. "(The recession's) not hitting us that hard. There's certainly a difference, but it's not that hard."

Businesses bring a new feel to Uptown

The atmosphere has changed in Uptown Westerville over the last few years as more and more independent business owners open shops peddling a variety of goods and wares.

"Uptown continues to try to get out from under the impression that it's just three little blocks of antique shops," said Kriss Rogers, president of the Westerville Uptown Merchants Association and owner of Outside Envy, which specializes in home and garden décor. "There's all kinds of eclectic businesses."

Many of Uptown's cornerstone businesses, such as the Déjà Vu consignment store, Amish Originals Furniture Co. and the Uptown Pharmacy, still serve customers. But over the years, new businesses have moved in, offering a variety of novel retail opportunities, such as The Blue Turtle Tea and Spice Co., Encircle and the Uptown Cigar Co.

Coffee shops abound, but Rogers said each offers a different experience.

"There's so much personality up here," she said. "I think of Uptown Westerville as our very own eclectic shopping mall."

Westerville City Council chairwoman Diane Fosselman said there are traditional elements that draw people to Uptown: the historical feel of preserved streets and buildings, as well as building signs, street signs, benches and flowers.

In addition to that atmosphere, Fosselman said the main draw to Uptown is the newfound variety offered by the locally owned businesses.

"As far as shopping goes, you can find things in Uptown that you can't find any place else," Fosselman said. "All of that just helps create this atmosphere of 'community-minded' and just gives people a real positive sense about Westerville."

And Uptown is continuing to draw businesses as well as shoppers.

As businesses move out, new ones line up to take their spots, Rogers said. "Right now, we have the problem of finding open storefronts on State Street," she said.

What makes Uptown in demand in addition to the mix of businesses and the historical feel, Rogers said, is the supportive community, from residents who shop Uptown to business groups and city leaders who band together to support the business district.

"You can't invent this stuff," Rogers said. "It's been here for a long while."

Jeff Hartnell, executive director of the Westerville Visitors and Convention Bureau, said those partnerships among businesses, community groups and city leaders have led to the shift in Uptown's atmosphere over the last few years.

"It's unbelievable the effort has gone to (revitalize) the energy behind this Uptown area," Hartnell said. "I'm so overwhelmed with what's happened the last three years that I've been here."

In addition to attracting new businesses headed by passionate entrepreneurs, Hartnell said the shift has drawn more people to Uptown in his three-year tenure at the visitors and convention bureau.

When he first took over his post, he said Uptown events put on by the bureau had an average attendance of fewer than 1,000 people. Now, he said the bureau's summertime Fourth Friday events host around 100 vendors and attract an average of around 6,000 patrons.

"All of this has brought a brand new energy to the community," Hartnell said. "This is a great community. This Uptown district is full of energy. It's full of new things."

That energy gives Uptown Westerville the edge over the many historical suburban shopping districts around central Ohio, he said.

"I wouldn't trade our Uptown area for any of them," Hartnell said. "It's really an amazing area."

Amish Originals finds home in city's Uptown

Editor's note: This story is the first in a five-part series examining what makes Uptown Westerville unique and highlighting selected businesses there.

Amish Originals Furniture Co. has been peddling heavy, handmade, wooden furniture in Uptown for 17 years.

The store has expanded three times, first adding wings to each side of its original location at 8 N. State. St., then adding an additional location at 38 N. State St.

"We just ran out of room, I guess," owner Doug Winbigler said of the expansions. "I think we're done now."

Winbigler said he opened his furniture store in 1992 with encouragement from his father, who owns a lumber yard in Ashland County. At the time, Amish men in the area were beginning to make and sell furniture.

"It was my dad's idea to open here," said Winbigler, who was working for The Limited at the time and was looking for a new career opportunity. Uptown Westerville was chosen because Winbigler said he liked the hometown feel of the area.

"We were raised near a small town," he said. "We were drawn to the charm, the look of (Westerville)." The location was secured when Winbigler spotted a "for rent" sign in a storefront window.

"It was serendipitous, I guess," he said. "It all just fell into place as we worked on it."

Since then, the furniture store has thrived, selling office furniture and tables at the original location and bedroom furniture at the store farther north up State Street.

Amish Originals attracts shoppers from surrounding communities to Uptown, Winbigler said, and customers visiting the store have shipped purchases to many points across the state and country. International businessmen working in central Ohio also have shipped items to Europe and Asia.

Winbigler said he believes the shop has been a good fit for Uptown Westerville because its sturdy, Ohio-made products sold in an independently owned business speaks to people's values.

"The values of our products are consistent with the values of the community," he said.

The store also does well, he said, because in 17 years, the business has become part of the community, supporting local schools and community groups.

The employees, who are trained to not pressure customers into buying items, also attract return customers.

"We're successful because we've been blessed with the people who work here," Winbigler said. "Nobody's ever going to push. No one's on commission. We still run this like a small-town store. I think that's why we fit in."

With the success that he and other business owners and Uptown have seen, he said he still knows his business depends on local customers.

"If the community enjoys Uptown, they need to support Uptown," Winbigler said.
Even if residents don't buy anything, he encourages them to head to the Uptown area to browse the many stores.

So far, he said, he has found widespread support in the community, seeing local customers return when they're ready to make new furniture purchases.

"We still see our very first customers from the first year we were here," Winbigler said. "We have the same people in here every year, every two years."
